have a special pasture in my heart for the Hooved Animal Sanctuary - the place where I found my horse, Sunny, my dream come true. I volunteered there for several years & finally adopted a horse of my own. Deb Deschamps Baker not only loves horses but really understands them. It's what has helped her to win in the show ring & bring abandoned horses back from the brink of death. Her combination of open pastures & sturdy barns, personal dedication & running a great team of volunteers & professionals, healing & nurturing are beloved by humans, horses & the other creatures on the farm. Here's a message from Deb:
"In a world of hurt sometimes it seems there’s not much we can do to help. The Sanctuary provides all of us the opportunity to do just that... help. And, we’ve been doing it for over 10 years. Visit us and see how the relief from pain and suffering shines in the eyes of these wonderful animals. We are nearby, we are your neighbors. Come along with us and be part of “what’s right” with the world. For all the animals... thanks for caring." |

Northeast Organic Farming AssociationNOFA-VT throws the best farm party in New England & it's happening this month in Burlington! The Winter Conference is part of the calendar of annual events known as Farm Church in our family due to the inspiration & enthusiasm we gain that far outweighs mere information to be learned at workshops. It's the biggest farming conference in the state, showing how important organic farming is here in Vermont.
From their website: "Since 1971, NOFA-VT has served as the voice for organic production for commercial producers, homesteaders and gardeners. We work to support local, organic farmers and gardeners, make healthy food more accessible to all Vermonters and build strong, agriculture-based communities. We work to help every producer understand the values of farming organically, and every consumer to understand the impacts of eating organic food. By building public awareness, we grow markets for organic food. Through organic certification, technical assistance, research, policy and advocacy, we work to grow organic agriculture in Vermont." Vermont Grass Farmers Association
Growing grass is a lot more exciting than it sounds! In fact, it's one of the foundations of sustainable agriculture. Grazing animals play a vital role in a working landscape, much as in Nature, as more & more farmers are quickly realizing & maximizing in pursuit of sustainable economics, land use & production.
The Vermont Grass Farmers' Association (VGFA) was founded in 1996 with support from the UVM Center for Sustainable Agriculture and USDA-NRCS. The VGFA helps farmers generate wealth from grass-based farming, provides leadership on grazing issues, and vision for the Center's Pasture Program. Benefits of VGFA membership include
VGFA membership coordinates with the calendar year. Yearly memberships cost $40 and end December 31. Join or renew online. Or print the brochure and membership form to pay via mail. This is a great time of year to join! |
